Egypt jail 8 men for appearing in gay marriage video.



Egyptian court has convicted eight men for appearance in an alleged gay wedding party on a Nile boat. The men involve have been sentenced to three years in prison. The video shows two men exchanging rings and embracing among cheering friends. View more pictures after the cut.... The eight men were detained in September when a statement from the office of Egypt's chief prosecutor said the video clip was "shameful to God" and "offensive to public morals." Majority of Egyptians are Muslim with a sizable minority of Christians. Homosexuality is a social taboo in Egypt, and only in recent years have fiction and movies included gay characters. Same-sex marriage is unheard of in Egypt. Though homosexuality is legal in Egypt, it remains a taboo. Police raids on gay venues have risen in recent months. The sentence was met with uproar from the families of the defendants, the Reuters news agency reported.
