Egyptian court has convicted eight men for appearance in an alleged gay wedding party on a Nile boat. The men involve have been sentenced to three years in prison. The eight men were detained in September when a statement from the office of Egypt's chief prosecutor said the video clip was "shameful to God" and "offensive to public morals." Majority of Egyptians are Muslim with a sizable minority of Christians. Homosexuality is a social taboo in Egypt, and only in recent years have fiction and movies included gay characters. Same-sex marriage is unheard of in Egypt. Though homosexuality is legal in Egypt, it remains a taboo. Police raids on gay venues have risen in recent months. The sentence was met with uproar from the families of the defendants, the Reuters news agency reported.
