With the prevalence of social media, it's getting difficult to separate our personal and professional lives. It's to the point that we need to assume that almost everything we share online will be public.
In 2013, Justine Sacco, who was a communications director for InterActive Corp., was fired after sending a horrible Tweet while she was on her way to South Africa. Unluckily for her, the Tweet became her most popular ever. The hashtag #HasJustineLandedYet started trending, she later deleted the tweet when She finally landed but nothing really gets deleted on the internet. Sacco apologized but was fired anyway.

In 2012, Cameron Jankowski, a Taco Bell employee, tweeted a pic of himself taking a whiz on a plate of nachos. Jankowski swears the nachos weren't served to anyone, but was fired from Taco Bell nonetheless.

Carly McKinney was math teacher at the time she posted images like the one above to her Twitter account. She also tweeted things like,
“Watching a drug bust go down in the parking lot. It’s funny ‘cuz I have weed in my car in the staff parking lot.”She claims that the Twitter account was a parody, and none of it was true. the school she worked for placed her on administrative leave, her students rallied to the defense of the Coolest Teacher Ever, but she was fired anyway.

Connor Riley made a Twitter post about an internship offer that is by her own admission "crass sounding."
"Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work."
She had no idea her tweet was going to cause such an uproar on the internet. Or that she would be landed with the nickname "Cisco Fatty." According to her, "I was posting status updates to people who are my friends, not realizing or caring that everybody in the whole world could see my updates because I wasn’t thinking my updates were interesting to anybody outside my group. Yup, I certainly learned the hard way."

Aflac was not amused. Gilbert apologized, but lost his job nevertheless.

Unsurprisingly, Jofi was fired from his job on the NSC nuclear nonproliferation team.

You'd think that a politician would know better than to tweet a picture of his crotch -- even if he intended the tweet to be a private message. But that's what happened to former Representative Anthony Weiner of New York back in 2011. And it ended up leading to his resignation from Congress.

Scott Bartosiewicz, Social Media Strategist.
Scott Bartosiewicz not only lost his own job when he mistakenly sent the following tweet to Chrysler's feed instead of his own personal account.
"I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the #motorcity and yet no one here knows how to [expletive] drive."He also lost his employer, New Media Strategies, their contract with Chrysler.
According to Chrysler,
"The company has invested greatly, not only financially, but philosophically in supporting Detroit and the U.S. auto industry, and we simply couldn't tolerate any messaging -- whether or not there was an obscenity -- that was denigrating to Detroit."

Octavia Nasr, CNN Senior Editor.
Octavia Nasr was a 20 year CNN veteran, and a senior editor for Middle Eastern affairs. But then she tweeted that she was "Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah ... One of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot." Fadlallah had been linked to numerous bombings. Octavia clarified that she had been referring to Fadlallah's position on women's rights. But CNN canned her anyway, saying that her credibility had been compromised.

Catherine Deveny is an Australian comedian and former columnist for The Age newspaper. But she lost her Age column after a series of offensive tweets during the Logies Awards ceremony. Things like:
"I do so hope Bindi Irwin gets laid.""Rove and Tasma look so cute... hope she doesn't die, too." This after his first wife had died of breast cancer. Not only was Catherine fired, but her actions led to a Twitter ban at the next Logies event.

Former major league pitcher who later became a Dallas radio producer and personality 'Mike Bacsik' got sacked for a dumb Twitter post.t like this:
"Congrats to all the dirty Mexicans in San Antonio."Mike's tweet came after Game 5 of the Dallas Mavericks vs San Antonio Spurs series. It didn't take him long to realize his error, saying "Obviously, I made a terrible mistake. It was very bad and stupid on my part."

"Lara Logan had to outdo Anderson" - referring to how Anderson Cooper was punched in the head during Egyptian demonstrations.
"Yes yes it's wrong what happened to her. Of course. I don't support that. But it would have been funny if it happened to Anderson too."

Phil Hardy, Spokesman.
During the 2013 Super Bowl. Phil Hardy, spokesman for Representative Raul Labrador of Idaho tweeted "Me likey Broke Girls" to the congressman's account. Phil was referring to a risque ad for the show '2 Broke Girls' in which the actresses dance around what looks like a stripper pole. The tweet was deleted after only 14 seconds, but that was 14 seconds too long for the representative, who promptly axed his indiscreet spokesman.

Seth Burroughs, Elizabeth Robblee, Ben Byers - Legislative Assistants.
Three legislative assistants working for Representative Rick Larsen in the United State tweeted out posts like these: Tagged December to remember or #D2R.
"My coworker just took a shot of Jack crouching behind my desk. We have unabashedly given up on just about all things work related #D2R"
"I’m pretty sure I couldn’t pass a field sobriety test right now. Looking forward to a day in the office."
Unsurprisingly, all three were fired as soon as the congressman found out!
15.

Damian Goddard, Sports Host.
Toronto sportscaster Damian Goddard was fired after tweeting against same-sex marriage. His tweet came in response to a tweet by hockey agent Todd Reynolds in which he opposed New York Rangers forward Sean Avery's support of same-sex marriage. This is the tweet that lost him his job:
"I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage."
After he was fired the TV network quickly pointed out that "Today's tweet from Damian Goddard does not reflect the views of Rogers Sportsnet."
16.

Sexist Firefighters.
Two Toronto firefighters were removed from duty after they were busted posting incredibly hack sexist Tweets of the kitchen/make me a sandwich variety. Just like the one Matt Bowman posted above.
Firefighter Lawaun Edwards had this to say, “would swatting her in the back of the head been considered abuse or a way to reset the brain?” They were fired.
